So people who are convicted drunk drivers can't get into Canada. Is there any way around this, or am I stuck in Maine forever just two hours away from the border!??

  1. hmmm ,, first i have heard of this - did you actually get stopped at the border ?  or is this hearsay ? - my second question would be how did they know you had an OUI ?

If you got stopped at the border and was not allowed in , id say your pretty much done (call the Canadian Cousulate and ask them)

  2. technically yes, if you were convicted of a criminal offense even DUI you cant cross the border and the same is true for Canadians heading into US. Not to condone drunk driving but most often all thats done at the border into Canada is a look at your drivers licence and birth certificate and a few questions about were you are going, how long you're gonna stay etc..  Very few times they do the full meal deal and run your name and even if they'll just turn you around ...

  3. Canada and the USA have a SHARED criminal records database, which is what the inspector is looking at in his booth as you are being questioned. Your vehicle  licence plate is being scanned by TV cameras, as you  drive up to the booth.

In Canada, being convicted for " imparied driving " is a BIG deal. It is a criminal code offence, and we consider it a social no no .

Until you have applied for  and received a PARDON, in the  US state where you  were convicted, you  will be denied entry to Canada. After you have your pardon, you can apply to the Federal  Government of Canada, for a waiver to be able to enter Canada.

    Our country, our rules. Sorry.

  4. If you're only 2 hours away, I would just try headng across the border.  Sometimes they will ask about criminal convictions, sometimes they will not.

But if they ask, I would tell them the truth.  They don't really like being lied to.  Alot of times they will ask you questions that they already know the answer to -- just to see if you will tell the truth.
