I have an RC tv and bought a new remote. No matter how I try to program it I cannot get it to change the video

I have tried all the codes provided but the remote will only change channels and adjust the volume. I'm trying to hook up a DVD but have to be able to get to the video output in order to watch a movie. The TV has video outputs.
