I went to the dentist yesterday and have antibiotics and 800mg motrin. But it's NOT helping !! I was told that I should feel some relief in two days, but that's a LONG time when you're hurting. Anybody have any home remedies for me ?? I've already tried salt-water and tea-bags.

  1. Place an aspirin tablet (non coated) directly on the gum beneath the infected tooth and allow it to dissolve by itself.  Also a warm (as hot as you can stand it) compress (a wash cloth or towel soaked in hot water and wrung out) placed against the jaw where the infection is could help (or a hot water bottle or heating pad on low).  Be sure to continue to brush as well as you can and rinse with listerine or peroxide.

    Good luck and God Bless.

  2. Try some vanilla extract just a drop or two.I know it sounds crazy but it will give some relief.

  3. Salt water is good for gums and oral infections, but it really doesn't do anything for pain.  The tea bags generally are great for slowing bleeding after having teeth removed, but again, there's no pain relieving qualities to them.  You might try ice packs on the outside of the jaw, or even heat--microwavable herbal packs, heating pad, hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, or hot wash cloth compresses.  I get some relief from heat for pain.  You may get some relief from oral anesthetics (like orajel), too, but it tastes awful and won't last as long.  You can also call and ask if you can add some tylenol, but offset the timing so that you're not taking the motrin at the same time.  If you're still getting no relief in a couple days, perhaps they need to give you a different pain reliever and/or antibiotic.
