I have an air gun question?

Recently I bought a Crossman Sierra Pro. When I first got the thing it seemed to be fairly accurate and when shot would make a fairly loud crack. I would say louder than the crack of a subsonic .22. Now though it seems to be shooting slow and it only make a spring ding noise. It cant seem to hold a group either. This whole time I've been using the same pellets they are the RWS Field Points. The thing is I got this to shoot some ground squirrels in a friends yard that's 5 acres. I've been trying shots at about maybe 20-30 yards and when I'm able to hit one they take off and don't appear to be injured. My question is this. Should I send this back for warranty because maybe its shooting slow? Do I need to use different pellets? Or should I just get rid of this thing because it cant do what I need it to. P.S. there is no possible way to get closer the ground squirrels are very very smart.

  1. Spring piston rifles have an odd (at least, to folks used to firearms) forward recoil. You have to really try to maintain a consistent hold between shots, which isn't really an issue when firing pre-charged pneumatic and multi-pump rifles.

The aforementioned recoil motion also wreaks havoc with "normal" firearm scopes, so you can't just slap on a scope and expect it to hold

center. Pick up a scope designed specifically for spring air guns and you should be fine.

  2. hmm well we shoot squierrels sometimes, we use a basic sort of wal mart brand name pellit gun, it can kill them and then we usually have to shoot them again after they are injured. if you payed more than 150 bucks for this thing i would defintatley say take it back where you got it from. it most likely has warranty. if you bought it new and its been less than like 6 months it almost surely does.

thats all i know, hope i helped you some

  3. took me couple months to learn how to shot a spring gun and im a more than fair shot. spring air rifles can be hard to shot accurately. the loud crack is common when new because of oils in gun that are burning off. your best bet is to get on the crossman hunting forum or airgun hunting forum and do some research on proper holds to shot a spring gun and make sure that all the screws are tight. the vibration of the spring can loosen them and also knock your scope off sight. the breakin period on my springers has been about 500 pellets before they start to settle down and shot good. if you do take it back, i recomend a benjamin392 if you dont mind pumping it after every shot. lot less pellet and hold finicky too! then again if your in the southern calif. area you can just invite me over and ill shoot them squirels with you!
