I have had these fish for 6 months , the algae eater died and I bought another one about a month ago. I do not know what the problem is but last week one of the black mollies was missing its tail and the other fish was eating on it and it was still alive , last night one of the gold fish tails were missing , and today another one of the mollies tails are missing...does anyone know what is going on? Could it be the algae eater , the other fish , the food , and another thing , my baby was waving her hand in the water the other day

  1. First of all, keep tropical fish with tropical fish and coldwater fish with coldwater fish.  Technically, you *can* keep goldfishes in a tropical environment, but it's not the best, as it can increase the chance of diseases for them.

Since goldfish produce huge amounts of wastes, there's a likely chance that missing fins are from ammonia poisoning. (goldfish p**p, leftover food, etc--> ammonia-->toomuch--> ammonia poisoning.) check your water parameters just in case, and do a water change and see if that helps.

Another possible candidate for this problem can be that algae eater. What kind of algae eater is it? Pleco's like the fish coat more than the actual algae, and chinese dojo loaches are said not to eat algae whatsoever. Otos, however, are safe and do an excellent job in cleaning small tanks, but I assume you won't have a small tank with that many goldfishes. (hmm. You should have a tank around 60 gallons or up? again, it's just a guess from the information you;ve given us and proper stocking rules) Some algae eating fish could be a problem to your other fishes, while others aren't. Check on that algae eater anyways.

Ps: Mollies need a tiny bit of aquarium salt in thier water, and if the water gets too warm, your goldfish can get ich--just a little heads up ;) Oh, and I'm sure your baby waving her hand in the water isn't a problem related to the fins, lol =)

  2. What kind of algae eater did you get and what are you feeding them?  If a so called algae eater does not get enough food, it will go after fish.  I would suggest tossing in a few slices of zucchini or cuke.

Second, mollies can tolorate water at 75 degrees with goldfish, however the temperature needs to be regulated.  This really isn't a good mix of fish for the main reason, your mollies are almost always pregers.  As soon as they have their fry, the goldies will eat them.

Your algae eater is the culprit here.  Try tossing in slices of zucchini.  They cannot and will not survive on algae alone.

  3. Algae eaters are very aggressive and will attack fish especially if they are at rest.  Another thing is that you shouldn't have all those fish together.  5 goldfish would need a 60 gallon cold water tank while mollies and the algae eater are tropical fish. Overcrowding often leads to aggression with fish.

  5. keep an eye on them fora while

  6. 5 goldfish by themselves need atleast a 55 gallon tank for fanicies, and atleast 100 gallons for comets or commons.  I assume that if you have mollies, your tank is rather small, but I could be wrong.  Mollies are troipical.  Goldfish are cold water.  These types of fish need really different tank conditions.  Do your research before getting any fish.  Don't rely on pet store employees.  They are probably in too small of a tank and starting to fight amongst themselves.
