Question:

I have an art question?

I made a mini mug with a little tea bag hanging from it for my mom and decided I like working with clay, so I went to Hobby Lobby and got a pack that had 25 different colors of little sticks of clay. They aren't that big, but there are a lot of different colors to use. What do you think I should make with it? I wanna make something that would be cool like the mug, cuz my mom really liked that. I really wanna make sure I make good use of it. Is there anything that would be similar to it? But whatever I make has to be little unless I use a few at a time.

Also, what are some crafts you think I would also enjoy doing besides working with clay? I already know I like painting, drawing, and making jewelry. And what are some tips on keeping the clay smooth? I really like making things and want to know what else I would enjoy. Also, please tell me what I would need and where I could get it from. 10 points for best answer! Thanks! :)

  1. You can get just about any craft item you might need from Michaels, AC Moore, Hobby Lobby, or Joann's.

Just experiment with different crafts! If you dont like them, you dont have to do them. I do a wide variety of crafts. Good luck!

  2. Have you ever done any ceramics?

Your project is poured - and dried = you clean the clay, (scrap the seams, wipe with a sponge) then you have the choice of painting in underglazes before having it fired - (baked in the kiln) or  paint in regular glaze after the object has been fired and considered bisque.

Underglaze you don't know how it will turn out until it is fired - some really neat artsy applications - drips and runs - really neat

Glazes - are instant gratification - what you see is what you get = great for matching sets - cups, etc.

Why don't you do a set of dishes - maybe a holiday set, or lunch set - mug/cup, and luncheon plate - with intials, or and design you like.  What an heirloom you could create =

You could make yourself a whole set of china for your future home =

    have fun

there are ceramic shops all over - look in the local phone book - some even allow you to pour the "slip" (clay) so it is a start to finish project made completly by you.

You could also do this project by attending classes at a community college with a sculpting class - you could use a potters wheel - and create all kinds of vessels =

  3. A picture frame for a favorite photo, candle holder, wall art is always fun, plant buddies to add to a potted plant or your garden, look around the house and turn your imagine loose.

On other crafts, try going to your local library or bookstore and just look through books in the craft and hobbies areas for something that peaks your interest, you will find so many possibilities, and many of those books will give you suggestions on where to find supplies for that craft. Card making is one suggestion because if you start experimenting now you have it perfected by the time the holidays arrive.

  4. i discovered my interest in clay in my creative crafts class (we made some clay things)

i haven't done any clay projects outside of class, but i can tell you a few of the clay projects i have done in class and art club and have seen the sculptures and ceramics class that i'll be taking this year do:

a pumpkin with a hole at the top and is hollow so that you can put a candle in

a dinosaur (wasn't my favorite to do as it was a little hard but it did turn out quite cute)

a crayon that looks like a crayola crayon but instead of crayola it has your name on it..we used it for this display thing but i use it as a paperweight haha

a plaque type thing if you wanna put a message for an ocasion

a mini rose (we made these for valentines day)

a small pencil holder type thing that you put on a desk

blocks (they were like little kid blocks with initials and pictures on them)

food/dessert (very very cute , can't wait to make it next year !), a slice of cake looked really good, and yummy!

i forget how you call this thing, but it was a type of thing where they put their favorite character on something and then would have a lid so you could open it and put stuff in it, it always reminded me of where grandmas put cookies in..lol

    flower pot holder

    animals

shoes (high heels would probably look best..lol)

    jars/containers

if you like a certain sport you could make the ball used in that sport, for example i loveee hockey so i made a hockey puck with my favortie teams symbol and colors on it lol

you could also make fake coins..idk why someone would make that but it sounds kinda cool haha

you could also make magnets..ofcourse you'd havta stick a magnet on the back after you make it and it would be quite fragile but it does sound like a good idea !

well that's all i can remember/think of right now ! i hope that helped !!!
