  1. When I had to write a paper in my cultural class I wrote about the religion of Buddhism and the cultural and religious symbolism behind the meaning of the sand mandala.  Pretty cool...

  2. How,Why Off shout  culture develops. Ex. Martin Luther separating from the catholic church.

  3. I compared the Japanese family system ("ie") to the Japanese corporate entity.  It was an very interesting project, and, fortuitously, there is a lot of literature on the subject.

Similarly, you could write about the differences between American and Japanese culture.  We Americans like to think that the differences between cultures are superficial, and we "are all the same underneath".  That makes sense, given our heterogenous society.  As you research the Japanese culture, however, you will find that not only are we superficially different, but "underneath" we are even more different than similar.

  4. You might look into the "cargo cults" of the South Pacific islands.  They formed after WW-II.  Its an interesting topic that relates to the formation of belief systems and cultural transmission.

  5. How about this:

  6. I don't know how long your assigment is but you can try something about the social sexual taboos in modern America.

You should be very surprised about what you could find....

  7. The sexual dances of the Trobiand Islanders

  8. How about differences in workplace compensation as a function of skin color, or height, or regional accents.

Do New Yorkers with a NY accent get paid more in NY than they would in Los Angeles or Dallas for the same kind of work, and accounting for the fact that the NYC pay scale is higher because of cost of living?

Do tall thin people get paid more than short fat people for the same job description and same level of competence? Are they more readily promoted? ( because the corporation feels they portray a favorable image?)
