I heard it is difficult or costly to change speakers when the car comes branded with bose. Is it easy and safe to get only subs upgraded in bose system e.g. get a pioneer 12 inch

  1. ya its safe to just upgrade the subs and leave the stock bose speakers. i would also probably put in a new head unit so you will have better control over your subs and have a higher quality sound. but the problem with sum cars is they come with a integrated amp which is a pain to work around i had the same problem in my lexus sc400 it added like about 100 dollors extra in labor.

  2. well in most cars adding bass (pioneer or any other) is easy.

there are 2 ways to put bass into your audi bose system.

a $10 high low converter will take your rear speaker signal and feed it to your bass amp (this will work fine)

or a $120 summation device like an AudioControl LC6 will work real well, but costs a lot more( the LC6 has a front, rear, sub speaker input and sends out: remote turn on and RCA signal to the bass amp.  it will also "sum" the inputs, meaning it takes the high/mid/low signals it gets from the front/rear/sub and send out a full range signal to your bass amp)

I have used both the $10 and $120 solutions and they both work. depending on your budget, use the most practical part for your needs.

first of all, before spending money, decide on a plan: install yourself, pay an installer to instll gear you buy online or where ever, go to a good sound shop and buy their gear and have them put it in.

decide how much you want to spend first, then get the best gear possible in that budget.

if you want good bass but not overpowering, try one 12" woofer, like a pioneer 1207d4 with a pioneer 7400d amp.  The sub is 400 watts rms and the amp will run 400 rms.  Best of all the cost is about 325 for both.   This should give you a solid sound.

for a lot of bass and the feeling of real power, it takes at least 2 10" or 12" subs and about 1000 rms.  In our car, the trunk is not that big and 2 subs will take up most of the space.  the cost will also grow to about 500 for an amp and 2 subs
