  1. enis32 is right.

    If you are going to diy make sure the power is off and have a multi-meter or ohm meter.  You can check the heating elements with an ohm meter with the power off.

    Put one lead of the ohm meter to one side of the the heating element and the other lead to the other.  You should get a very low reading .3 to 1.9 if you get nothing the element is dead.  Do the same to the second element if there is one.  They are behind a panel on the water heater usually held on with 1 or 2 screws.

    Be careful.


  2. i know this may sound dumb but the first thing to always check first is the breaker or fuse.

    another thing to check, (its happend at my house) is there anything else in the house that uses hot water that is running non stop and emptied the tank,(again this happend to me when washing machine kept running hot water),

    if this doesn't fix it, it is quite possible that your heating element went out. there are two elements, upper and lower.

    these are not hard to change out and can be bought at most hardware stores that carry water heaters.

    just remember to kill the power first.
