She has a good life and she is happy, but because of her brain issues, we don't know what to do with her and I don't know how much more of this we can handle.

  1. Do the humane thing and have her put down. It is all about "quality of life". If she can't control herself, she isn't living well. I know it is so hard to do, but she will be so much better off. It will hurt, trust me I know, but it's for the best. Please don't let her suffer.

  2. I had an epileptic kitty, too, so I know how frightening this is.

Prissy would do just fine going to the litter box until a seizure was coming on and for a day or two prior, she would go all over the house.  As frustrating as this was, I knew to watch for the episode.  I liked to be with her when she had one, I would talk to her and stroke her, and she recovered faster.

Here is a link for a Yahoo Group for epileptic kitty caretakers.  Maybe someone in this group could give you some hints or insight to help you help her.

    Purrs to you and kitty.

  3. Tell the vet. Maybe the dosage is too high and she is getting confused. Or maybe she needs a different epilepsy drug. Also, did you recently switch the brand of litter you use for her? Some cats are really fussy about this. Good luck with her--I had a blind cat and can relate to how hard it is sometimes to have an animal with special needs.

  4. it sounds to me like you know what you want to do. you just want someone to tell you you are not a horrible person for doing it. you are not sometimes you have to face those issues no matter how much they hurt.

  5. We have a dog that is Epileptic.  Are you in the beginning stages of getting your cats level of medication up in it's blood stream so it is at a theraputic level?  Meaning, a level of medication in the blood stream that can control the seizures?  Or are you and your vet still working to reach that level and your cat is having break through seizures?

If they are break through seizures and your still trying to get them under control with the proper dose of medication then all I can offer right now is support and encouragement that you don't give up and keep working with your vet until you can get the level of medication right.

Has your vet ever suggested "Phenobarbitol" for the seizures?  That is what our dog is on, and also what we gave one of our cats for a while after she went through a stage of having seizures.

I'm assuming that like our precious Scooter, when your cat isn't having a seizure she's perfectly normal.  I wouldn't trade the love of our special boy for the world and he knows it.  I wish I knew what more to say except to offer support for your situation.  I don't know that you are doing anything wrong by loving this cat.  I can understand the fear and frustration that you may be feeling.  But as I said, if there are still adjustments to be made to the medication levels to get your cats condition under control then there is still a chance that things will get better.

Please feel free to contact me if I can offer further support.
