The split in the bark is about three feet from the base of the tree and has opened up to show the inside of the tree stock. Is this caused by disease or parasites or may it be some other problem. Can anyone help me with this problem?

  1. just the natural growth of the tree can cause it to split. Just make sure it stays clean and free of bugs that can cause problems. it will heal over it self.

  2. Cherries show this type of damage often. It is caused by the live portion just under the bark that is called the cambium layer freezing during the winter. The damage may not be obvious right away, but you will later see the split. It doesn't normally kill the tree, but as a precaution I would keep it sprayed with a pesticide/fungicide like a rose spray or orchard spray.Once the bark has sealed itself (it will appear swollen and rolled under at the edge) it should be fine.I'm not familiar with the Evan's variety, but if it's a fruit bearing tree use the orchard spray only.
