  1. find the two trim relays on the motor (small black squares size of an ice cube) pull them out and switch their positions and try the trim again. if the motor goes up but not down the one relay is bad    this is much easier than pulling things apart to check switches  plus if you need to raise the motor to trailer it you can!


  2. GMC  is right i had the same problem and now carry an extra

    but to trailer and get you home just switch back and forth

      $$$ should be about 10.00 to 15.00   and is well worth not having the hassle out on the water  cause if the trim gets stuck in the up position  you can't get on plane

  3. Depending on the year, you probably have two relays that control the trim. One of them is probably bad. You should have a trim switch in the control handle and one on the lower engine pan. Try both switches, and if one works and the other does not, you probably have a bad switch. You can also verify the switches by exposing the wires going to the switch. They should be red, green, and blue. Red feeds 12 volts to the switch, and the switch puts 12 volts to the green for down, or to the blue for up. If you jump the switch by touching the red to the blue, and the engine goes up, your relays and everything else is good, and your switch is bad.

  4. Have you tried both switches (on motor & on controls) ? Sounds like a trim relay. The trim relays on the motor. I have a E-rude 200 & the relays are on the left side 1/2 way up power head. There is a black cover that covers the relays, you can feel the relays click when you press the switches. The relays are available on ebay, be sure to match the years, 1988-1994 same, 1995-1998 are the same, I think I am right. The Evinrude website has parts diagrams.

  5. Make a jumper wire long enough to do the test.  Test the solenoid by jumping them.  Jump from the hot connection to the solenoid.  One will go up the other will be the down solenoid.  If one works then use the working one to test the one that is not working.  Make sure all connections are clean.  One tip,  trim motors need the full power of the batter, 12.5 volts.  A weak battery will not operate a trim motor.  Another possiblity is the switch is burnt on one side.  You can test the switch with a voltmeter.   Good Luck.

  6. simple and least guess work-- replace both solenoids. the switch most likely isn't the issue since it works to raise the motor.The solenoids don't cost much.Make a wire diagram b4 you pull off wires for easy re-hook.

  7. Check the solenoids>>depends what yr look on wiring schematics>>Also check the trim switch on the control handle that there's 12v coming out both sides>>
