  1. you need more than an idea. You need something to show that it has a chance of working. Either a working model or a good set of drawings with a complete written description.


  2. It's a long process and usually quite expensive.

    There are a number of good books out there on how to obtain a patent. Get at least one of them and read it. If you still think it's a good idea to pursue a patent, then follow that instructions in the book. You will still need a patent attorney and you will need to have a professional patent search performed. This is not something to attempt to do on your own. All you will do is (at best) create an easily defeated patent.

    You may, though, want to consider licensing your invention to a company that has the resources to obtain the patent for you.
