I don't know what procedure to take. What I really want is to sell the improvement idea of a product to the manufacturer? But I don't know how to go about it. Should I design an example of it, should I go talk to an attorney, etc. For those who have been through this, I would greatly appreciate your advice. Thanks a lot.

  2. Hi, this is something which you have designed to make the improvement to some product. If you feel that is unique then go for registering as your design ...etc.

Regarding advising the existing manufacturer  that is selling your idea, for this you need to first know the customer feedback policy of the manufacturer.

Contact the customer relation representative and project your idea what you are expecting. And then the next step shall open for you. In the next step explain the pros and cons of your idea and if possible show the benefits of such improvement.

Once the manufature decides its better / not you know what's next to do....................

  3. I'd start by talking to a patent attorney.  If your improvement idea can be patented you should get it registered as your idea - if you go to the manufacturer first they might pinch the idea and pass it off as one of their own.

If it's not patentable it's not really saleable so you might as well approach the manufacturer and see if they will pay you for it.  At this stage don't say too much about it - if the manufacturer can't think what your idea could be, they might agree to pay you for the plans - or a rough sketch.  They have technicians who can turn rough plans into draughtmen's blueprints.

I have referred only to patents.  Depending on what your idea is "design copyight" might be more appropriate.  The initial procedure is pretty much the same, though.

  4. Usually you want to start out by making a sample of your product.  You may go about that by contacting companies with your idea to see if they can let you use some of their tech. specific equipments (if needed.)  Contacting an attorney usually is not the best way to go if you want to maximize your profit.
