actually be in door Or out door. It has leaves about a half an inch I guess. I have had it since January and until this last week it has been doing excellent. Now it is turning brown on the leaves and I don't know what to do to take care of it.

It is very bushy and pretty, are there any ideas of how to prevent it from dying?

  1. It's important to know if the plant likes sun or indirect light.  You might cut a small branch from your plant and take it to a nursery.  They will probably have some advice for you.

I have some indoor plants that like daily water, some that only want it every few days.  You learn over time.  The other thing is I add fertilizer (like Miracle Grow) to my water once every 2 weeks to help the plant grow and stay strong.

I listed a few sites online that might also be able to help.

  2. The stupidity of your question is only surpassed by the stupidity of the answer that precedes my own.

  3. I'm guessing it is a Sword Fern (aka Nephrolepsis exaltata), which is the most common of the 30 different species of ferns. A common cause of brown leafs is because the air is too dry and/or the root ball is too dry.

Because they are originally from tropical regions it likes semi shady light and a warm and damp environment (especially in the summer months). It especially needs a higher level of humidity if it is in direct sunlight.

Use room temperature water and try feeding it weekly with a diluted dose of plant food. After October you can water it less often but avoid drying out the root ball.

Mist daily in the winter and every year in the spring re-pot it using either all-purpose potting soil or if not African violet mix works just fine.

Also last but not least try to avoid insecticides because this plant is very sensitive to such chemicals.

  4. you probably deserve to be shot in both kneecaps and thrown into a hole somewhere

  5. Most people over water.  Some ferns can handle being in wet dirt all the time some cannot.   Also some cannot handle the warm dry air or direct sun. Spray it with water every day put it in indirect light of shade, and try not to let it get to hot.  If it dies the roots could still be ok and it will come back when it cools off.

I might be ok to put it out side in the shade for the summer, but make sure it gets its leaves moist.
