I have an inground Hayward pool. It seems to be automatically backwashing what could it be?

I am losing about 3" water a day and I see the water coming out of the pipe it usually comes out of when I backwash. I pushed all the timer controls in, so the pool wouldn't automatically come on, but the pool comes on anyway, so I now have to turn it off at the main switch to get it to stay off. Any ideas about what this could be would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure the pool is on the filter setting on the multiport valve? If it is and water is still coming out of the backwash line you may need to replace the spider gasket inside the multiport valve.
