Question:

I have an old B Linksys router (don't have model w/ me), & want to upgrade to N?

Router is also 4-port switch, & I'm thinking it is slowing my connection down (I already know the wireless speed is compromised). Has anyone had major problems with a Linksys N & Vista? I know they purport the router to have been working great w/ Vista, but who would deny that their product doesn't work well? Thanks to all for the insights....

  1. The type or brand of router shouldn't matter when trying to connect to vista. It will just be using the broadcasted signal, so there is not compatibility issues there.

I think that you are worried about speed, but even with your B router the bottleneck won't be your router, it will be your internet. I have comcast internet which gives me speeds up to 6Mbps i think. Your wireless B router is going to give you 11Mbps or throughput, and mind you thats not constant becuase not every device is hitting at the same time.

What i'm saying is that upgrading to a N router will make transfering files within your home (or business) faster, but as soon as you start talking about the internet, your B router will work just as good as an N router will.

So from a speed point of view, you dont' need to upgrade. There are many other reason you might want to upgrade though. Like for instance the range is better on N, and you will be getting all the new security standards built into your router that might not be there with your outdated Wireless B.

  2. Upgrading to 802.11n will require buying a brand new router and new WiFi adapter cards if they don't already support 801.11n.  There is no way to make the upgrade from B to N just with a firmware upgrade.
