I have an old Singer sewing machine (serial number 15644494), does any one have any info on this?

my mother was getting rid of this - but i couldn't bare to see something so old be skipped. I was just wondering if anyone knows where I can get some information about it? I have tried searching the serial number but have had no joy?

Any info would be gratefully received!!

Have you tried to google just   OLD singer sewing machine or gone to the singer site, or antique singer sewing machine?

singer.com has info on every model and pictures posted there, i have an old one from before the ww2, i offered it to them for their singer museum but they already had that model, so it sits in my attic, its a light green in color, is yours?

You can call 1 800 4-singer and they can generally tell you the model and when it was commissioned.  Assuming that there is no letter before the serial number, your machine seems to have been made in 1898.

Singer may be able to tell you what models were made in 1898.  Other sources of information might be:

There is a yahoo group called "wefixit", dedicated to getting old sewing machines back up and running -- some very knowledgable people there, with quite a bit of overlap with the treadleon and ismacs folks.  Good basic information in the files on care and feeding of older machines, and some decent access to parts, as well as handholding and advice on getting the machine up and working again.

(oh, and if old decals are cleaned improperly, they turn silvery -- so read the file on decals!!!)

I suspect if you put up a few pictures of your machine and asked for help identifying the model on wefixit, you'd have good help.

Treadles are a lot of fun to sew on; hope you have fun with this!
