the bicycle I have now has 26 inch wheels for open terrain. and I'm gradually aclimating myself to riding for health and pleasure as I'm 57 years of age and can only deal with a limited amount of exertion before I go into shock . I'm trying to find a bike that handles better and takes less effort but can go on mixed terrain as well.

  1. I absolutely suggest a Specialized Crossroads Sport.  They run about $350 at your local bike shop.  It is a hybrid bike, a cross between a mountain and road cycle which is great because its good on road or off.   It has a super comfy seat and it is set up a way that you sit up straight not having to lean over to reach the handlebars.  The bike comes in womans and mens styles and also comes in different sizes.  Your local bike shop will hook you up with the perfect size.

I am a serious mountain biker and I got in a nasty crash last fall.  I bought the Crossroads Sport about 4 weeks ago to rehab my knee.  It's not the bike that I would personally chose for myself, but for my current ability it is perfect.  I would surely imagine that it would be perfect for someone looking to get back into an exercise routine.

  2. Since we can't meet you in person through Y!A I strongly suggest that you visit at least 3 local bike shops and explain your needs and budget.

There are a very large number of bikes that will fit your needs. Avoid any models with full suspension unless you are going to be going on rough trails, and ignore brands... generally Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale tend to have one grade lower components at the same price as others like KHS, Raleigh, and Diamondback.

Test ride the ones that you like and buy the one that "speaks" to you.

  3. look for a used one. People buy them all the time with the intention of riding them and then they don't or it hurts there back or something. look in your local newspapers
