I have an older 36 inch APEX television, my question is how to get the dvd to hook up properly to work .?

Do I put the in video and audio from the tv to the dvd or the out video and audio from the dvd player or vice versa. It works on video 2 but no sound. Video 1 has sound but no picture so what am I doing wrong. The dvd player is a Kenwood 5 disc
