Question:

I have an older 5.1 home theater receiver w/o hdmi. Can I still get my ps3 at 1080p with surround sound?

I was thinking I might be able to plug my ps3 directly into my HDTV and somehow run the sound from the ps3 to the receiver. I just have no clue how to do this. Does anyone know what cables I need to get? I'm no audiophile so pretty much any way to get this working would be great. Thanks!!

  1. I did this for my son recently. You run the HDMI cable to your tv directly for the video. The ps3 only has an optical OUTPUT so therfore you will need an optical toslink cable run to the optical INPUT of your receiver from said output for your audio. You must get into the menu system of the ps3 and make sure the digital audio out is set to bitstream and check off all the audio formats so that it recognizes them. If everything is done correctly then the dolby digital symbol will light up on the face of your receiver when a movie is playing after the intro usually.Good luck!

  2. yes! if your ps3 has an (optical digital audio output) which im sure it does.

and your home stereo receiver also has an (odao) as well then you can get surround sound as long as the games are formatted for it. they will

say whether or not on box! you will then need to purchase and odao

cable at any walmart or radioshack for instance to make the proper connection. check your manuals to see if your home stereo receiver

can accept (spdif) digital connections before connecting. as sony usually uses this digital codec almost always! and your ps3 is a sony product.

most sony products do not use standard digital codecs. so unless

your home receiver is a sony/phillips product i would be careful to check the owner manuals of both pieces of equipment before making the connection. as far as your video....well has nothing to do with audio at all! I hope this answered your question.
