I have an older admiral fridge and it hasn't been keeping food cold. It only is 60 degree in the food section.

The freezer is keeping ice cubes, but the food section will not get any colder than 60. The temperature control is on the highest setting. Can anyone tell me what I should check or should I get a new fridge? Thanks for the help.

  1. It could be a problem with the defrost system. If you notice any ice build up inside the freezer, that will give you a clue. Push on the back panel and listen for the sound of crunching like walking on snow. If you hear that, it could mean your freezer is not defrosting. Also check to ensure the freezer fan is working right. A defrost issue will stop air flow and a non functioning freezer fan will limit the amount of cooling the fridge compartment gets. If any of these, its a pretty straight forward repair (under $150). If it is the compressor or you have a slow leak of freon, look at getting a new fridge since that will cost you at least $350-$400.

  2. If you have a single temperature control then there ought to be a "flap" between the freezer and the fridge which regulates how much cold air is going to each part. It can be adjusted to reduce the amount going to the freezer which means more cold air will then go to the fridge. Otherwise, if the motor seems to be running all the time, then some of the gas has probably escaped and it's time for a new fridge. Good luck.

  3. Sounds like the Condenser is making its LAST ice cubes... It's time to give it the Old heave-ho, and invest in the Future of your refrigerated foods... :)

  4. If the box is a over under style you have a defrost problem. If the insulation between the freezer and fresh food compartment is soaked with water this will cause problems. Look at the ceiling of the ff compartment if you see ice the insulation is wet I would replace the box.
