  1. go with the component cables for picture and use the players

optical out, if equipped, for sound. this will give you the best

    picture and sound.

  2. I would recommend to go out and buy a new DVD player.

For any new HDTV, you need to have an upconvert DVD player.  When you go to the store, look for the keyword "upconvert"

Reason why you need the upconvert:

Older DVD players are not built for new TV's.  To put it simple, your old DVD player is made to output the box (4:3 ratio) picture that corresponds to an older TV.  Your new HDTV is widescreen (16:9), so when your new widescreen TV receives your box picture from the DVD player, it doesn't know what to do.  Therefore, you get a distorted, stretched picture, as well as a decrease in quality.

If you upgrade to a new upconvert DVD player (which cost as low as $40), it'll do 2 things for you.

    1.  Increase in quality (as the name suggests, it up-converts your current DVD's to a little bit better resolution). and

    2.  It formats all of your DVD's correctly so they fit naturally onto your widescreen TV.

  3. You most likely do not have HDMI on the old DVD player.  You want component video cables and a separate audio cable.  That is the next best thing if you do not have HDMI.

  4. The component video cable will be the only video output from your DVD player that supports the progressive scan.  Therefore...go with the component.

  5. The answers listed above are all correct. GO with the component video the S video will not support 480p it only supports up to 480i. You will have either an optical or coaxial digital audio out. You must use this if you want 5.1 surround. If you dont have surround then you can use the left and right (white and red) audio ouputs. These are the ones you will use for your tv. The digital should only go to your Home Theater receiver, if you have one.
