I have an overnight lay over in Madrid. Where is the best area to stay and things to do for a 6 hr stay?

Hostal Cantábrico, type it at Yahoo! It is 3 blocks from Puerta del Sol and 6 from Royal Palace, a very nice place but hurry, the airport is about 40 mins. far!

I agree with Gary. But I am afraid that if you try to visit the Royal Palace you could spend queuing most of your time there. So a nice walk from Sol, to the Royal Palace (without visiting it) and visiting la Plaza Mayor (which is on the way and it's where Inquisition used to judge people) and passing next to the Royal theatre. Once in fromt of the Royal Palace, you could visit Sabatini Gardens (on the right) or La Almudena Cathedral (on the left). The cathedral is very new (inaugurated by John Paul II) so do not expect the typical gothic one.
