  1. render them in another color it will look great

  2. Paint them, my aunt did and they look awesome

Just be sire to do a thick coat to get in the cracks and grouves.

  3. Paint it

  4. Obviously paint is a suggestion. However, why not build a surround for it? This can be installed and easily taken down later. You could paint, tile, stone work, "quikrete", Venetian plaster, etc, etc. The ideas are endless since it would not be permanaent. Good luck. LT

  5. Paint them. I did. Use a good quality primer (Zinsser brand) Let it dry well and put a good quality gloss paint on them. patience is the key.

For more exciting, do a search on painting inside brick

  6. I like the idea of doing a decorative surround. How much room do you have -- if the fireplace is in a corner, for example, it would be tough to fit material around it. Otherwise, a nice crisp white paint would work, but realize you can't go back once it's painted -- not easily anyway!

  7. If you want a bright color prime the bricks first then paint them any color you like, you can also white wash them if you like that look. You can face out the bricks as well. Visit DIY.com and do a search on fireplaces ,you will find many  ideas there.

  8. Marble.  We recently got tile on our floors, and putting a lighter color of marble tiles around your fireplace with a wood shelf on the top not only looks good, but it makes your fireplace (and the room) look bigger.

here's kind of an example i found on the web, but we've got off-white marble with light brown wood:

  9. Englais?

  10. Spray paint ftw. Do some artwork.

My advice is to try something less permanent than quickrete if you're going to do it yourself. What that is, I don't know. Once that stuff is one there, it's not going to come back off, and you won't be able to just sand it down to the way you like it.

  11. Basically Look at your decor what is your style? If its more contemporary I would dry wall the surround to hide the brick and paint the surface, also tiling is another way if you just cant stand the brick period. If your style is more Traditional then I would paint it as your accent focal point, t make your room stand out. Go to your local book store ie.. Barnes and Noble, and look in the Home and Garden section and they have great reference books.
