Question:

I have an unusual question on wage garnishments?

I was getting ready pay some bills friday night and after I logged into my bank and saw my savings account I nearly had a heart attack, $16,000 was missing. I called the bank and they said the Veteran Affairs had put that money on hold but had given no explanation why. My bank has never seen anything like this, they told us that with something like this there would be a note in the system for the reason of the garnishment. I checked our credits and there is nothing, no judgments, no liens, nothing. We've received nothing from any collectors, courts...we'd notice something like this. We can't do anything until Tuesday because of the holiday. What I want to know is, is it legal for who ever is doing this to do it, with no communication to us or anything, is it likely that it's a mistake?

thank you

  1. anyone in your family a veteran? had any dealings with the v.a. or student loans? there are several possibilitys. in any case there has to be a garnishment order. the problem is you are dealing with the government. contact the v.a. and find out what's going on. in the meantime, you are screwed!

  2. A hold from Veterans Affairs is not a garnishment.  Was the money deposited in your account and then somehow "held?"  If so not familiar with that trick.

You should GET notice, but you might not receive notice until after the transaction occurs (which it has, I know).  If you are receiving money from the VA, you should have a case worker or a representative; contact him Tuesday.

When you checked your credit reports, you checked your legitimate credit reports.  If I had access to a credit reporting machine, I could pull up reports for you with any SSN that has ever been used in conjunction with a similar name to yours, or for any name at any address you have ever lived, or I could make up new addresses to pull up reports.  Not trying to scare you, but if this is not an error, it could be the first hint you have of ID theft.  There have been several computers with VA info on the hard drives stolen in the past two years.
