I have an upcoming grade 10 provincial exam, writing tips?

We were noticed that there will be an essay question (obviously) and my teacher told us that choosing a narrative essay will get you a better mark for some reason.

Does anyone have any tips for me on how to write an effective and a quality essay?

And how do you study for an English exam??

It is difficult to give you ideas without knowing the kind of English exam you mean - for example, what topics have you studied this year?  What was the focus of the course?
