I have an2005 Mercury Saltwater outboard 115hp while on the water the heat alarm set off now its stuck on?

I have an 2005 Mercury Saltwater outboard 115hp while using it for about 1 hour the over heat alarm started sounding I waited the usual 20 minutes for it to stop sounding but it did not, every time I turn over the key start sounding, any suggestions?

  1. "the usual 20 minutes" - what does that mean?

    When your overtemp alarm sounds it means something is wrong.  even if it stops after 20 minutes...to keep operating the motor like that is sheer lunacy.  you'll turn a perfectly good repairable motor into an anchor.

    Water coming out the telltale only means the water pump is pumping.  It doesn't mean enough water is circulating the powerhead.  Change your impeller and your thermostat.

    The temp switch is on the end of a tan wire coming off the cylinder head(s).  When the cyl head temp rises too high, the switch closes, grounding the circuit to sound the horn.  If the horn sounds when you know the engine's cold, you have either a faulty temp switch or else a wiring fault somewhere along that tan wire the insulation has got rubbed off and it's contacting a ground wire or the engine block.


  2. The sender on the head is not working> Is it squrting water out the pee tube and is the heads to hot to touch>
