I am going to make an appointment to see a doctor- to make sure everything is alright, and maybe to get on anti-depressants. I want to recover, and I feel this is the first step. I am also going to be seeing a therapist.

My question is.. when I make my appointment- and they say "What is it for?". What should I say. Should I say I am anorexic, and I need to get some help? I feel very paranoid saying that over the phone. I don't have a primary doctor- so I would be a "new" patient. What should I say?

  2. I think the first person pretty much covered all the bases.  Her advise is very solid.  However, if stating the specific problem is going to stop you from making the appointment, then you could just tell them your overall symptoms.  Weight loss, lack of energy, missing periods, etc.

  3. First, congratulations on making the brave and wise decision to enlist professional support.

You are smart to incorporate both a physician and a therapist on your treatment team.

When you go to see the physician, it's best to just lay it on the line - that way everyone is on the same page. You could say something like this: "I've been struggling with an eating disorder for the past X months/years. I am concerned that my health may have been effected. What do you recommend as my best course of action" - Then let the doc take it from there. Also be sure to mention that you are getting set up with a psychotherapist.

Again - kudos on the wise decision.
