I have been a social drinker for a number of years.....

I usually have one or two drinks during the week, but drink more heavily on the weekends with friends. I have recently decided to quit drinking altogether and have not had a drink for 4 days now and I have been moody, cranky, emotionally unstable and depressed. Could this have anything to do with not having a drink or am I just crabby?

You should definitely talk to somebody you trust and feel comfortable with ,whether is a family member or a professional .Alcoholism is a chemical dependency and in my experience (ex husband and family ),some of the symptoms you describe could be a red alert . Or maybe is a coincidence ,there could be something else that is troubling you at the moment ,and you could have a drink once in a while . But confide in somebody first and take care of yourself .

You might want to explore all the reasons why you want to quit, and see if you were using drinking to fill an emotional void in your life, or if you used alcohol to help you in social situations. You mentioned that you drank "heavily" on weekends, and perhaps you might now wonder how your social life will be different. I would suggest finding activities that don't involve drinking to take your mind off these symptoms, because whether physical or emotional, they are obviously affecting you. No, it is not possible to have withdrawal under those circumstances.  Withdrawal results from chronic drinking.  You might experience some symptoms of withdrawal if you stay drunk for 4 or 5 consecutive days, but even then it wouldn't be too bad.  You need to stay drunk for a few weeks or months to experience significant withdrawal.  It sounds like you need to talk to someone for counseling about whatever else is troubling you.  Hakuna matata.
