I am an advit golfer and a 10 handicap and I was recently asked to coach the girls golf team.

Any thoughts in what this experience might bring...or should I just say no and go on with my life.

Thanks for all the advice.

  1. do it! teach them wutever u can. i'm sure you'll be paid, so its a few extra bucks in your pocket, but also u get the chance to really make an impact. golf is a great game that teaches many life lessons.

  2. I was in exactly the same position as you a couple of years ago ... a mid handicapper asked to coach HS girl's golf.

It's been a good experience. I don't coach swings (unless I see a very serious flaw) -- thats for their private coaches and dads. What I do is provide structure for their practice -- insisting on lots of short game work over endlessly hitting range balls. I make them go through a variety of drills in succession. I work with them on course strategy, on how to read a green, and on the rules of golf (I insist that they really know their rules).

Mainly, the job for me is that of time manager. Practice schedules, match schedules, bus schedules. Picking which six will play (a match for us is "play six, score four"),

There's also the psychologist aspect: smoothing ruffled feathers, working out personality conflicts, motivation

And one more thing -- advice which was given to me by another coach in my first year -- don't make them cry.

  3. If you do not have experience as a teacher, or experience teaching golf you might consider declining.  What coaching or teaching experience do you have if any?  And a 10 handicapper is lower than most, but by no means an expert.  I guess it depends on the pool of talent available in the area.  You will be frustrated as some kids are really dedicated and want to improve, but others just want to put in a an hour a day and then not think about golf anymore.  If you had a girl in high school and wanted to excel at golf, would you be happy that someone with your skill and experience was her coach?

  4. If you want a career in this field it is a good place to start.

Is this a High School Team, or College, or what?  Some schools will want an accredited person.

I have coached several teams and I have enjoyed every minute of it.  The girls are serious and very competitive, so you be serious too.

  5. id say go for it but just make sure you KNOW THE FACTS before you start blabbing your mouth to them about how to improve their game
