Also, the ads sometimes re-format my screen where I can no longer see the text or the bottom half of the playing board.

If you were toying with him by slowly taking his pieces when he was definitely going to lose, he might have a reason to get upset. However, everybody's style of playing chess is different. Don't worry about getting barred and play how you want to. Make sure you don't insult someone and you will be able to play without the fear of being banned. Keep in mind there are always people who need anger management, so you should do what I do and ignore those kinds of people and play on Funorb.com. The chess games have no ads. (I may not have noticed them if there are, but they will cause no problems.)

I don't really recommend yahoo chess.  There are other places to play that are way better.

Free Internet Chess Server (FICS) is a server dedicated to chess!  It uses some special software to access/use it.  At first it might seem a little cumbersome but it is designed for the serious chess player.
