I live in Illinois but have been purchasing cigarettes online through the UK. The place that I usually buy cigarettes from told my boyfriend I might be liable for taxes. Is this correct?

  1. Quite possibly, yes.

When you purchase cigarettes online you evade your states cigarette excise tax.

Many people have been "busted" for this in the past few years.  Some states have been more aggressive than others.

On another message board, some woman posted that she received a billed from the State of Indiana for over $2000 for the taxes on cigarettes that she bought online.

  2. Yes...if they catch you.
