I have been considering starting kayaking even though I have never done so ever. Best way to go about it?

Before I start throwing money around buying stuff I never used, I decided to ask here about kayaking. I have personally never partaked in the activity except when I was in the boy scouts, which was like 17 years ago. I enjoyed it then, so I know it will be a good experience. I'm mainly doing it to increase my outdoor activity level. What is the best way to get started? Join a kayaking group? Buy a kayak, head for a river, and just start?

  1. Check here for dealers in your area:

    http://www.paddling.net/dealers/

Go to the nearest dealer - try to avoid big box stores (d**k's, REI, etc.) in favor of actual paddling-related stores.  Visit them, talk to the staff and ask LOTS of questions.

Find out what kind of water is near you... 90% of your kayaking will happen on the body of water nearest your home.  So... if you really want to try to learn whitewater, but the nearest whitewater river is 4 hours away, and you live 1 mile from a large lake.... You can bet the lake is where you'll paddle the most.   You'd want a boat that is well-suited to the lake environment.

Ask the dealer if they offer free demo days.  Many shops will have a variety of different types of boats out in an area where you can test paddle them to see what you like.  Also, sign up for a beginner's class - even though you've paddled before, a beginner's class will get you doing things the right way from the start, so you don't pick up any bad habits.  (I took a beginner's course after having paddled for 6 years, and it was very useful!)

Lastly, before you buy, RENT a boat for a day, or even just a few hours.  Lots of paddlesport shops offer credit towards a purchase if you rent boats from them.  Test paddle before you buy!!!

I tested over 4 different days at one shop - and tried 3-4 boats each day before I found my first kayak.  Take the time to get the right boat for you, and you'll enjoy the sport a whole lot more, and you'll feel better about the money you spend on it!

  2. It's partaken, just to tell you

    DEFINITELY join a kayaking group.

As far as getting a boat, check with your local community college and see if they do rentals.

Take rolling lessons once you know if you want to do it.
