I have been experiencing one contraction per hour for more than 12

I'm am 37 years old and 38 weeks pregnant with my third child, I have had a normal pregnancy thus far. Last night starting around 12:30is I experienced a tight contraction for about 3 minutes. In a 3 hour period I experienced several of these contractions then they started getting milder and spaced almost exactly an hour apart each lasting about 3-5 minutes.

I did not experience this with my previous two pregnancies and honestly I am baffled. Is this normal? how long should I expect this to continue? Should I be worried about anything and what?

I wouldn't be worried.  It sounds like you're body is getting ready to have the baby :)  You could be in the very early stages of labor.  If you have concerns, call your doctor.  Best of luck to you!!
