  1. He united what till that time were independent states into the country Germany.  This took place sometime around the 1860's.

  2. Wish I had my notes with me. Otto van Bismark is known for uniting the separate states in the germanic area into a single country. I forget how he did it though. Sorry.

  3. As the first poster stated, Otto von Bismarck united the many kingdoms into one and ushered in a representative parliament.  Bismarck was a master of negotiation and was responsible for a great many of the treaties that later were the foundation for the first world war.  He was in power at a time when most of the world superpowers were busy colonizing Africa and the far east.  When asked why Germany did not follow suit, he replied "Germany's interests lie in Germany."  The few times he exercised his military strength, it was to make even the borders, not necessarily a land grab.  When Kaiser Wilhelm died and his son succeeded him, it became clear to everyone including the new Kaiser, that Otto was much smarter than he and as such, Otto had to go.  The young Kaiser was the laughing stock and was snubbed by most of the European heads of state.  Bismarck on the other hand, had alsways been taken deadly serious.
