I will be a junior and school starts next monday, and i am pretty active and in shape, but probably not in much condition to run 2-5 miles. I really want to do it, but i am afraid i will be really, really, really out of shape. Everyone has told me not to worry, but i still do. Do you think I can get into shape fairly quickly when the season begins just through practice? Any advice and suggestions will help!

  1. When i first began it was so hard for me i was overweight and stuff so it sucked...but i pushed myself constantly and i got in shape im shure ull do fine since u say ur very active and in shape but u dont run 2-5 miles a day u run atleast 7 miles a day plus push ups and sit ups yes ull get sore and youll have trouble breathing but ull get use to it :] i got use to it and im top JV which is good :] good luck :]

dont be afraid if u say u can do it then u can so go for it!! and try hard and u will get better trust me drink a lot of water! atleast a gallon cause if you dont then ull get dehydrated and thats bad it will interfear with u gettting better be shure to eat healthy and time urself to see how ur improving

also when u feel u want to walk find someone ahead of u and keep up dont ever walk in cross country its a sin lol

  2. dont worry. from now till it starts practice running once around the block, then twice 2 blocks 2 days later and so on ad so on. what helped me was thinking " oka,y just to that lap post, just to the lamp post." and once i passed it i though t" okay if i can make if pass that lamp post i can make it to that stop sign, if i can just make it to that stop sign" ect.. . i didn't run 8 miles until the 2nd cross country meet. it really helps to have a running buddy because they'll encourage you, and you don't want to fall behind and make them suffer too so you'll work harder

if you live near Stevens creek or hamaltin ave in san jose ( AMC 14 saratoga) theres a great place dedicated to running shoes called " runnign revolution" and they will video tape you running to give you tips AND to help them find the best running style shoe for you ( i had a problem with my arch and when i got video taped. .just my feet and running. . .they found shoes that helped that problem and told me how to run better without putting pressure on anymore of my body parts  )

  3. Definitely go for it.  On our team, many people don't even train at all before the season starts.  They usually aren't that fast at the beginning of the season, but they get better.  Since you are pretty active you shouldn't do too bad.  The first couple weeks you'll probably be sore, but after that you'll be good.

  4. u should run, ull get into shape throughout the season, and the coach will b happy to have another runner, u will b sore at first but its worth it

  5. EDIT: Sorry, Cate I didn't realize you are a girl! Ignore the parts where I refer to you as a guy :D

EDIT 2: I don't want this to sound sexist, but seeing that you are a girl...you may want to just give cross country a try. The girls team on my school has a coach who is more forgiving for injuries. Yeah, go for it actually! Ignore some of the stuff I said below, but you can still read it.

Impossible. Sorry man, I run Cross Country too. I'm going to be a Senior varsity runner, and I can guarantee you that you will be running way more than 2-5 miles a day even if you are on JV. Cross Country is pure h**l if you aren't in shape at the beginning of the season. You can't get in shape by next monday, you don't have time. Maybe if you had a month, you might barely make it but your coach is going to run you hard and you are going to get injured because your legs/lungs/heart just can't handle the sudden workload. Even if you are in shape (which I'm sure you are) you probably aren't in 'running shape.' It takes a month of running every day for 4+ miles to be in good running shape.

Don't worry about it though, I've really grown to hate cross country. It sucks and my coach never gives me credit for doing well. Not a very gratifying sport, but it does add years to your life!

  6. I run cross country, and many of the people who run it aren't in their top physical state of fitness in the beginning of the season. Getting into shape for cross country if as you said, u are pretty active and in shape, should be pretty easy. As long as you go to practice everyday, work hard, and push yourself, I think you should be fine. Plus you will never know if u can do it if u never try...

  7. You will get into shape fairly quickly.  You'll be tired and sore at first, but you are far stronger than you think!  Mind over matter, don't give up.
