I have been told I have Spanish ancestry but my mother and stepfather keep making racial jokes about hispanics/spanish people and sometimes acts as though we aren't part Spanish, but my mom keeps saying that we have Spanish ancestry, she claims she found it in doing geneology research, I don't know if I can believe her. What do you think?

  1. I'd say put up or shut up. Ok, well maybe not QUITE that blunt, but ask mom to show you her research and see for yourself. We have a very strong rule in genealogy. If it isn't documented, it isn't accepted. If she can show you the research and it's accurate, then believe her.

Of course, that doesn't excuse your parents' poor judgment in making racial statements like that. On that matter, just tell your parents that you love and respect them, but that you're not comfortable with the racism and wish they'd hold off on it when you're around.

  2. Well, first of all..does your mother have any type of proof regarding that you all have Spanish ancestry? That is the first place you need to go...before you ask questions. If your mother does not have a type of source to proof it, ask your mother's kin folk---aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and see if they can tell you. If you cannot find the answer..try your best to verify it.

  3. Well she's just playing she doesn't mean it in a bad way. My mom is white and my dad is black and they make racial jokes about each other's race. Nothing personal.

  4. First of all, this is not a slam against your mom or stepfather, but anyone who makes jokes like you mentioned are racists and/or bigots. There is NOTHING WRONG with having Hispanic or Spanish ancestors (if it weren't for their explorations of the "New World" a few hundred years ago, none of us would be here now). What is your family name?? If they have it listed, go to www.surnamedb.com and find out where the name comes from. It is a free site to look up this sort of thing, or send me an email at the address in my profile, and I'll look it up for you.

  5. IF your ancestors are from western Europe, there is a very good chance you have Spanish ancestry.

You did not state where you are, where you are from, background, anything.

If you want to know for certain, try:

Oh, yes! I want it, and I want it now, and it must be free. Does that about sum it up? (I hope so, because that is what I always want...)

You should start by asking all your living relatives about family history. Then, armed with that information, you can go to your public library and check to see if it has a genealogy department. Most do nowadays; also, don't forget to check at community colleges, universities, etc. Our public library has both www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com free for anyone to use (no library card required).

Another place to check out is any of the Mormon's Family History Centers. They allow people to search for their family history (and, NO, they don't try to convert you).

A third option is one of the following websites:

    http://www.familysearch.org/

    http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    http://www.geni.com/

Cyndi's has the most links to genealogy websites, whether ship's passenger lists, ancestors from Africa, ancestors from the Philippines, where ever and whatever.

Of course, you may be successful by googling: "john doe, born 1620, plimouth, massachusetts" as an example.

    Good luck and have fun!

Check out this article on five great free genealogy websites:

Then there is the DNA test; if you decide you want to REALLY know where your ancestors came from opt for the DNA test. Besides all the mistakes that officials commonly make, from 10% to 20% of birth certificates list the father wrong; that is, mama was doing the hanky-panky and someone else was the REAL father. That won't show up on the internet or in books; it WILL show up in DNA.

I used www.familytreedna.com which works with the National Geographics Genotype Program.

    Russian culture goes way back...

    See this website:

    http://www.ao.net/~fmoeller/rusorig.htm....

I have read about the Tartars; they were a nomadic people who even had their houses on wheels.

As you can see from this article, Russian people come from quite a few ancient tribes.

    See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ukrainian_l...

And, as to Russian/Viking relationships, see:

    http://www.viking.no/e/info-sheets/eston...

For a more thorough analysis, opt for a DNA test. I used www.ancestry.com. It revealed that I have Russian, Ukranian, etc., ancestry.

DNA testing will prove whether or not your dad's direct line or your mother's direct line have Spanish ancestry. I know I do...Have fun searching. And never mind the "racial jokes"; while no one should employ such things, they neither prove nor disprove any thing in ancestry.

  6. There is a big difference between Spanish and Hispanic. If you have ancestors from Spain, then you are part Spanish, Latin Americans would be Hispanics/Latinos. So it depends what kind of people they make fun of
