I have been told that passports for land travel to mexico are not required until june 2009, is this true?

Yes it is true. That is the latest date. In the meantime a driver's license and birth certificate will suffice. The problem is not entering Mexico, the problem is to return to the US. Just thought I would clarify that!

Yes thats correct. there will be a flood of canadians and Mexicans when that takes effect so plan accordingly

Yes for land and sea travel you do not need a passport until June '09. But if something happens to you while you are down there say a medical emergency and you need to be rushed back to the US you will not be able to fly home.
