Today is day three of actually being diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia and I'm finding myself coughing more than ever. On top of that, my chest hurts like its bruised from coughing so much. Is there any way to ease this or do you know how long it lasts? Lastly, does pneumonia affect your voice or I wonder if I have laryngitis too.

  1. oh, I'm so sorry for you! I always get laryngitis with bronchitis or pneumonia. That will go away before the cough will. Your chest IS going to be sore- like a truck ran over it! And, the coughing may last for months- or go away soon with the antibiotics. Last year, I coughed for the better part of the year- about 8 months! It was miserable to say the least! I though it would never end I would be coughing the rest of my life! The first time I had it, I didn't feel totally myself for months either- always tired, etc. So, I sincerely hope that you get well soon. OH, the only thing I could do for the cough was suck on hard candies- it seemed to sooth it for a little while.

  2. The length of time you have pneumonia is all dependant on how your body and the pneumonia responds to treatment (the antibiotics). Could be days, could be weeks. The chest pain is normal with pneumonia, and with coughing hard. Did your doctor not give you a really good cough medicine? They should have! If not ask for one!

Lastly pneumonia in itself does not effect your voice. This is usually caused by sinus drainage dripping on your larynx (vocal cords). Good luck and get well soon!! ;-)
