  1. for as long as i can remember

  2. Blue eyes contain low amounts of melanin within the iris stroma; longer wavelengths of light tend to be absorbed by the underlying iris pigment epithelium, and shorter wavelengths are reflected and undergo Rayleigh scattering.[5] The type of melanin present is eumelanin.[19] The inheritance pattern followed by blue eyes is considered similar to that of a recessive trait.[7] Eiberg and colleagues showed in a study published in Human Genetics that a mutation in the 86th intron of the HERC2 gene, which is hypothesized to interact with the OCA2 gene promoter, reduced expression of OCA2 with subsequent reduction in melanin production.[42]

The authors concluded that the mutation may have arisen in a single individual around the Black Sea region 6,000-10,000 years ago, except blue eyes with brown spots around the pupil who are not related to this mutation.[42]

Blue eyes are mostly common throughout Northern and less in Eastern Europe.[citation needed] One survey estimated that nearly 90% of Icelanders have blue or green eyes. Blue eyes are common in Ireland, Germany, Netherlands , Austria and in Scandinavian countries. [43] They are also present in Southern Europe and rarely in India and in some population of Central Asia and Middle East.

A 2002 study found the prevalence of blue eye color among Whites in the United States to be 33.8% for those born between 1936 and 1951 compared to 57.4% for those born between 1899 and 1905.[7]

As melanin production generally increases during the first few years of life (especially if exposed to the sun), the blue eyes of some babies may darken as they get older

  3. Got some good, informative answers here. Funny thing, my parents both have blue eyes, and mine are hazel. My maternal grandmother had brown eyes. The rest of my grandparents had blue eyes. As mentioned by the more intelligent answerers, it all has to do with the genes of our Ancestors.

Both of my brothers are color blind, as are all my male cousins on my maternal side. This, too, has something to do with my Mom's Paternal genetics, as her father was color blind, also.

  4. There are only two distinct eye colors, Brown & Blue.

Brown is dominant, and blue is recessive!

Green is a variation of brown, and gray, is a variation of blue!

Unless both parents have blue eyes, a brown and blue eyed parental mix would likely result in appx. 75% brown/green offspring, and 25% blue/gray offspring!

  5. Both of my parents have brown eyes yet I have blue eyes. This is because blue eyes are a recessive trait; brown eyes are a dominant trait.  Everyone has two genes for everything, one from their father and one from their mother.  Only when both are the recessive trait of blue eyes do they occur.

You very likely have brown eyed ancestors more recently in your family history than you may have suspected.

  6. Each person's eggs or sperm include copies of genes from huge numbers of ancestors, going way back.

So, way back, there were brown-eyed people in your family.

Bust most of your ancestors were blue-eyed.

Sorry, I don't know how far back; I doubt there's any way of knowing.

But suppose, say, 8 generations back, there was one brown-eyed person.

Every so often, that gene would be in the egg or sperm that actually results in a person.

  7. Blue eyes have been traced to about 6 to 8 thousand years ago to a mutation in the genes that control eye colorin someone, somewhere near what is today, the Black Sea.

OK! I was a bit off on the time frame, try :

This measn, of course, all of us with blue eyes are related.

    Have fun.
