They used to sell a small electrical device that would remove the copy protection, but that would be set up between 2 separate machines, but you've got both VHS & DVD in one machine, so there's no easy way.  Maybe you could GOOGLE a hack for your particular recorder.  There are hacks out there, basically secret codes you'd enter with the remote, that can disable region coding, and sometimes copy protection.
