these two cockatoos r kept in the same cage. i have put water and seeds(bought from pet shop) in the cage. i don't think they have eaten anything. is it normal? when will they start feeling comfortable at my home? what should i do to make them feel comfortable? is it ok to keep both in the same cage or should i keep them in two different cages. i don't know if they r male or femlae. which is the best place to keep them in my house.

i have heard that if they r not comfortable, they scream a lot. my birds r new to my place. so if they r not comfortable, why don't they scream?? please help me...

  1. Please feed them more than seeds.  A seed diet will slowly kill them.  Vegies and fruit should be a big part of their diet.

If they are handleable, offer them treats - melon bits, almonds in the shell, by hand.  They are in a brand new environment so it might take a day or two.

Is this cage big enough for 2 Cockatoos?  They need lots of room.  Remove any commercial perches and replace with branches - big ones for their feet and leave bark and leaves on.  They can chew and enjoy these.  Make sure the branches have not been sprayed with poisons.

Put them near a window so they can see the world.  And make sure they get several hours of direct - no screen or glass - sunlight a week.

    Good luck.

  2. It's going to take a while for them to get comfortable to the new house.  Just give them time to get used to you and the house.  They're just scared so that's why they aren't eating.  It should be OK to keep them in the same cage but just make sure they don't attack each other.

    I hope I helped!

  3. just shy, don't worry

  4. most of the advice is good, but no one mentioned taking a sheet, and covering ALL of the cage except a small opening for them see out of. They need to feel SAFE in this new place. They need time to settle in, feel secure, and figure things out for themselves- WITHOUT feeling overwhelmed by too much going on that they can't get away from (hello, they're in a cage! They are flying creatures that are well aware they are trapped) Also, try letting them settle before you push a relationship onto them. Take a pic of the cage set up you have, email it to anyone with a clue about birds, to point out anything you need to fix! Then go read about owning them. Because owners are the main cause of death in caged birds. Especially by scaring, poisoning them, or not feeding them right, AND- most important of all, not knowing the signs of a sick bird (they TRY to "act" normal, even when they're dying!!)

  5. just let them adjust first

im sure they would get used to you

  6. It's very common for birds to be uncomfortable when they are first brought home. If they birds you bought were not in the same cage when you bought them then that also is probably unsettling them, but it's not wrong to have them both in their together, as long as there is room.  Do they have toys?  That is essential.  Birds don't scream unless they are in pain usually. If they are just uncomfortable then they sit and don't move.  It will take time, but my guess is that they will loosen up.  Just keep them in a well lit, high traffic area of the house.  But away from startling things, such as other animals, children and loud noises.  Just let things happen naturally, but don't let them sit without you touching them for too long.  They will get used to that, and it will be hard to change.  Hope this helps.
