I have broken knuckle?

I have a broken bone in my hand. (The knuckle on the small finger) I have had xrays and had it seen to by a hand specialist but they recommended that i just leave it to heal on its own. The other option was surgery. But the problem is all i was told was to tape my two fingers up and i keep bumping it as i have no protection on it. Does anyone know of any supports avalible? Is taping fingers together with no cast normal procedure?

  1. Yes, taping is the standard treatment. I think the plan is to keep it mobile to a small degree as if it were plaster cast or splinted it would most likely loose it's ability to flex when healed. I expect you will eventually train yourself to avoid bumping it as the pain will remind you!

  2. I broke my knuckle many years ago now.

I had a cast put on, but due to my work, I took it off after one day as it was getting in the way. My knuckle has healed fine. The only difference from the way it was before is that when I press on it, I can feel slightly where there is a raised bit of bone, presumably where they have fused back together.

Short of surgery there is little they can do, and chances are it will heal back together perfectly fine as it is due to the rest of your hand holding the knuckly in position. Taping it to the finger next to it will ensure it is kept in the natural position.

Try putting padding around it such as a padded bandage I can remember that it was pretty painful at the time but good luck

  3. Yes there is nothing else you can do, apart from staying out of rough bars so it doesn't happen again.

  4. Yes, taping fingers together is normal. I broke a toe by tripping over my underwear last February and that's what the nurse at the minor injuries unit did to my toe. A toe is protected by shoes but a finger is more vulnerable. I'd ask at the chemist if they have any type of protector. You could wear woolly mittens but I doubt it that appeals in mid summer, especially when the forecasters say we might actually get something resembling summer this week.
