I went to change the front brake pads on my 04 toyota corolla, There were shims connected to the back side of the pads where the brake grease goes. Do I put the shims on the new pads or do they come like that only for the factory pads? I replaced them a month ago and put the shims on the new ones and greased the backs to prevent squealing. It worked fine for three weeks but now it squeals again. The rotors don't seem to be worn bad. Any suggestions? I will not take the car to a mechanic because they always s***w me over.

  1. Yes, the shims go back on the new pads!

  2. First of all, any high quality pads will come with new shims made onto the pads. If you just got pads with no shims, they are garbage pads, like autozones duralasts or raybestos. I would use a high quality pad, have the rotors resurfaced and the squeaks will be gone. You did the correct thing however by re-using the old shims. All it takes for a brake squeak is for a rotor to be out by a few thousandths of an inch (which our eyes cant even see).

  3. i think those metal pieces your talking about are on the pads when you buy them.

  4. Try taking the shims out, the pads might be seating unlevel against the rotor during braking.

  5. squeaks most offen is rust or the type of pads.. so either have rotor turn and try scraping the rotor edges where the pads ride

  6. go to a car place where they can help you fix your problem.

  7. This sounds very familiar, I did the brakes on my 04 Camry with the exact same results. The replacement pads didn't come with shims, so I used the old shims.

My plan is to pull the pads out and add more anti-squeal compound.

I hope this works for you.
