I play tennis and almost every day this week it has been approaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In the middle of the night I get Charley's horses and they hurt so bad. I stretch before tennis and I drink a good amount of water during it. What can I do to prevent these? What am I doing to make these happen?

  1. You can't just drink water while your playing or just before playing , you have to drink water throughout the whole day. Also you should stretch after your done playing tennis.

  2. drink more water and get more Potassium...if your not taking a multi vitamin then start that with more water. When your working out you constantly have to revitalize your body because you loose so much water through sweat, voiding aka peeing, having a BM, ect. that your body has to replenish the fluids.  When I work out i have to drink at least 8oz of water every 10-20 min or I get cramps.  If that does not fix it then you may have something else wrong with your adrenal glands...or something else, so if it does not get  better see a doctor.  I have a website that may be helpful too!

  3. A lot of those happen because there is too much sodium in your body. If you get them, pull your foot back toward your face and it'll make the muscle loose and the charley horse will stop. You may be flexing your calf muscles while you sleep and it could be causing this to happen as well.

  4. Charlie Horses can be caused by dehydration.  If you are playing tennis in 100 degree weather, you are probably losing a lot of fluid through sweat.  You need to hydrate before, during and after the matches to keep properly hydrated.  It would not hurt for you to drink a bottle of Gatorade after your match to put back needed salts and electrolytes into your body.

  5. Nutrition also plays an important role. The body needs sufficient amounts of calcium and magnesium to support optimal muscular function. Because the body cannot manufacture these two minerals, it must be supplied with them in foods and beverages. An inadequate supply of calcium and magnesium can lead to problems with muscular coordination. Mineral deficiency generally manifests itself as an increased tendency to suffer muscle cramps and "charlie horses". The best sources of calcium are milk and dairy products (e.g. yogurt, cultured milk, cheese, etc.). Milk and dairy products are the only sources of calcium that are worthy of mention; if no such foods are eaten, then one should definitely drink calcium-rich mineral water (150 mg of calcium per 100 ml of water) or eat calcium-enriched foods such as breakfast cereals or special energy bars. Some of the newer calcium supplements may also be helpful.

The best way to improve one's supply of magnesium is to drink a suitable mineral water that contains at least 50 mg of magnesium per 100 ml of water. Athletes are particularly at risk because increased perspiration causes greater mineral losses, and these losses must be compensated for. Dehydration can also manifest itself as problems with muscular coordination or as cramps, so athletes should drink mineral-rich athletic beverages before and during workouts, especially when the temperatures are high and the stress is intensive
