I have cox internet at home for my laptop...?

But when I switch to "wireless" on my laptop to take it to a friend's house, I have no connection. How can I change settings, or what can I do?

You do that that only if your friend lives next door you can use your wireless connection at his/her house. The signals cant transmit very far.

Also using wireless internet requires a wireless router.

Sounds like you may be confusing the standard WiFi you've got at your house with slower and more expensive, but more widely available, cellular wireless.

If your buddy doesn't have a WiFi connection at his house, well, you're obviously not going to be able to connect to it.
