  1. Check with your local Board of Education to see what the requirements are in your area.

  2. your parents have to directly run and supervise the home school environment and actively see that you are learning the following subjects:

Reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing, and English grammar

That is all this is required.

No notification, record keeping or testing is mandated.  No special programs or books are required.

They cannot, however, teach or supervise any other children who are not under their legal guardianship full time.

You have to freedom to choose the methods used to fullfill the minimum requirements, BUT the state CAN challenge your home school environment at any time without notice to VERIFY you are indeed being educated in those subjects on an on-going basis.

So, if the state department of social welfare comes around in the daytime you better have books and materials to show them covering all the subjects and work papers, tests, essays and other back up proofs to establish you are doing work.  That is usually sufficient.

If they come and find you playing X-box and see no math books, no history books, no science homework, if you can't show them last years books, you can expect them to challenge the situation.

  3. Dont listen to Earl D. He is wrong, as usual. If you want to know EXACTLY what you have to do, go to HSLDA.org and find their list of homeschool laws. Select your state, and read over your options. I believe Michigan is pretty laid back as far as home schooling goes. Go have a look.

If you still aren't sure wht to do as far as choosing materials, search <your state> homeschool groups in google, or even on yahoo groups, and ask what others in your area have been using. YOu may even want to join said group so that you will be in contact with other HS parents and children/teens, and possibly be able to do group lessons for some things, go on field trips, participate in social events, etc.

Congratulations on taking the first step into what is perhaps the most exciting educational adventure a family can go on.:)

  4. The last thing you want to do is ask the schools. They are not gonna give you the information you need and besides that the less they know the better. They will only try to discourage you from homeschooling and always try to tell you it is illegal. Homeschooling is legal in all states.

Yes the first site to check out the laws in your state is hslda- homeschool legal defense Association

  5. look up the A Beka Program on the internet

  6. I live in Michigan too.  I was homeschooled and will be homeschooling my daughter.  I was enrolled in Clonlara and will be using it for her.  They take care of all the red tape for you and they are fully accredited.  www.clonlara.org
