  1. I'm petrified to fly but it's no different than driving thru a thunder storm.  In fact I'd say it's worse driving because of the fear of other drivers hydroplaning.  The plane is a little shakey but not bad.  Just close the shade and relax :)

  2. Not the best way to fly: Usually you get a a lot of turbulance, and if you're REALLY unlucky, they'll make an emergency landing.

  3. Pilots don't fly directly through thunderstorms - at least the ones who want to still be alive at the end of the day. All pilots, commercial and private, are taught to avoid flying directly through storms. Severe turbulence from storms can cause damage to the aircraft and lead to loss of control.

They will fly through rain, but they fly around storms. (I have an air band radio and have heard pilots ask for route deviations around storms many times. It is also routine for departures and arrivals to be temporarily stopped if a storm is directly over an airport.)  Yes, you can get some turbulence even if storms are in the vicinity. Whether it is "bad" depends on your definition of bad. You can get bounced around a bit and some passengers get nervous about it. However, it doesn't necessarily bother experienced passengers.

  4. It really depends on how bad the storm is. If the storm isn't to bad then the plane just shakes, but if it is bad then it I will be honest, it is awful. Don't worry though, just wear your seat-belt and close your eyes, and hopefully it will finish. Hopefully though you won't fly through a storm.

  5. These people are OVERREACTING!

It's not that bad, you only get a bit of turbulence and if it's really bad the pilot will usually divert the plane in a different direction to your destination.

You wont get struck my lightening, no emergency landing, don't worry it's fine :) If you get travelsick, you're in for a tough ride.

The turbulence is just like being in a car on a rocky road, enjoy your flight :)

  6. I understand that the planes are required to not fly any closer than 20 miles near a thunderstorm. They will fly through rain. On my Thursday flight from Houston into Orlando, Tropical Storm Fay was off the coast, but the rain bands made the last 20 minutes of the flight NOT FUN. It was like offroading in an old Jeep. But the pilots knew what they were doing and they landed us safe... we all clapped. I think with regular, good old-fashioned rain that there should be no problems. My advice... never go where there's a tropical storm or hurricane lurking nearby!
