  1. If your canvas was clean and washed before priming and sealed with a modern acrylic or oil based primer the canvas would not normally be expected to have fungal growth if kept in normal dry conditions.Any growth on the surface of the paint could be wiped away with a tissue soaked in turpentine and then wrung out before use.The paint should of course be dry before attempting this.If the painting is of any age,or great value you would be wise to consult a professional restorer for an inspection rather than relying on a blind evaluation,as a DIY fix is not recommended. It is not normal practise to keep oil paintings in contact with a sealed glass if it is framed.

  2. Fungus and mold will grow on pretty much anything that is left in a dark, damp place. This is common in tropical atmospheres, and has been an emerging problem in flooded areas.

Clean only with a damp - not wet - rag. Use clean water with a few drops of chlorine bleach, wring out the cloth so it's not dripping, don't soak the canvas, just wipe the surface. Wipe completely clean again with clear water and let the sunshine get at it for a few days. Direct sunlight will r****d and possibly stop the growth. Don't use any other harsh chemicals on the painting. I personally wouldn't recommend turpentine - this could weaken or damage the paint or varnish.
